Fighting against child poverty

Our support and involvement of this ministry began around 80 years ago, when Stockton Baptist Church began to support children in the UK and internationally through Spurgeons Childrens Charity. This support grew from thanksgiving collections on Christmas Day and at other times of the year.

In 2007, three members of Stockton Baptist Church became Trustees of Spurgeons, and as part of a strategic review, identified that the complications inherent in providing international aid made it necessary to transition that arm of the charity’s service to a party who were efficient and effective in this area. At this time, 800 children, primarily AIDS orphans, were being supported by Spurgeons in Kenya and Uganda.

During a Trustee visit to East Africa in 2009, they saw Global Care at work and were impressed by their partnership with local organisations and faith groups, and their significant capability and track record. Subsequently Global Care was chosen to take forward and extend the care Spurgeons had established.

Over the past decade, around fifty SBC members have sponsored children in Kenya and Uganda through Spurgeons and Global Care. Many sponsors are now supporting their second or third child through school! We give a little of what we receive, and it can have a big impact on a child’s upbringing.
